Operation EarthWatch
VPIS, in partnership with the City’s Environmental Sustainability Council, assists in the management of the Operation EarthWatch program in local elementary schools.
Students in kindergarten through 5th grade who live or attend school in Falls Church City are invited to learn and have fun through Operation EarthWatch. This free afterschool activity offers monthly meetups (October through March) at Mary Riley Styles Library featuring crafts, science experiments, reading stations, and more. Themes include:
- Energy
- Recycling and Reuse
- Nature
- Water Conservation
- Waste Reduction
- Wildlife
Students are also able to complete monthly activity sheets at home at their own pace.
All students who participate in Operation EarthWatch receive a certificate and are invited to participate in our year-end party, our float in the Falls Church Memorial Day Parade, and our annual recognition at a City Council meeting. Students who complete all six activity sheets during the school year receive a free Operation EarthWatch T-shirt, and students who participate fully from kindergarten through 5th grade have their name engraved on a plaque in City Hall.
